Chinese gender chart

The traditional chart, looked up by the mother's lunar age and the month of conception. A bit of fun with a long history and no predictive power.

Where it comes from

The chart is usually said to have been found in a Qing dynasty tomb and is passed around as a legend rather than a document with a traceable origin. It pairs the mother's lunar age with the lunar month of conception to give a boy or girl. It is a tradition, not a method.

When Villamor and colleagues tested it against 2.8 million recorded births in Sweden, the chart matched the actual sex about half the time, which is what you would expect from guessing. We publish it because people ask for it and because it is fun, with that caveat attached.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Chinese gender chart accurate?

No better than chance. A population-based study of 2.8 million Swedish births (Villamor et al., 2010) found the lunar calendar method predicted the baby's sex correctly about 50% of the time, the same as a coin toss. Treat it as a tradition and a bit of fun.

What is lunar age?

In the traditional Chinese reckoning a baby is one year old at birth and gains a year at each Lunar New Year. A simple approximation, used here, is your age at conception plus one. The exact figure can differ by a year depending on where your birthday and the conception date fall against the Lunar New Year, so try the neighbouring row too.

Which month do I use?

The chart is traditionally read by the lunar month of conception. This tool uses the calendar month as a stand-in, which is what most online versions do. If you know the lunar month, pick it directly.

How can I actually find out the sex?

Through your provider: the anatomy ultrasound usually offered around the middle of pregnancy, or blood tests such as cell-free DNA screening where offered. Only a clinician can give you a reliable answer.
