NHS Sleep Routine for Newborns (UK)

Newborn baby sleeping

NHS Guide: Establishing Healthy Sleep Habits

Newborn sleep is different from adult sleep and developing good sleep habits early can help your baby get the rest they need. Remember that newborns sleep 14-17 hours per day, but only in short periods of 2-3 hours at a time.

Creating a Sleep-Friendly Environment

  • Keep the room dark or dimly lit for night-time sleeps
  • Maintain a comfortable temperature (16-20°C/61-68°F)
  • Use white noise to mask household sounds
  • Always place baby on their back to sleep
  • Use a firm, flat mattress with a waterproof cover
  • Keep the cot clear of toys, pillows, and loose bedding

Bedtime Routine

  • Begin a simple routine from the early weeks
  • Consistent sequence of activities: bath, gentle massage, feed, story, bed
  • Keep stimulation low before sleep
  • Recognize early tired signs: yawning, eye rubbing, fussiness
  • Put baby down drowsy but awake when possible

Daytime vs. Night-time

  • Keep daytime naps in bright or natural light
  • Night-time feeds and changes should be quiet, dim, and minimal
  • Engage with baby more during daytime feeds
  • Night-time feeds should be calm and business-like

Remember: All babies are different, and it may take time to establish a routine that works for your family. Follow your baby's cues and adjust as needed.
